Chinua Achebe & Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’

posted 13/10 by philharrison

Next book group is on 6th Nov, we’re looking at Chinua Achebe - as promised, here is a link to an essay he wrote about Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’, well worth a read (not sure why it’s been split into numbered sections, but will be useful for reference purposes anyway!).

Are you sitting comfortably?

…… then I’ll begin.

Thanks to everyone that came along to the first book group meeting last Thursday. We’ve got a very ecclectic mix of people and texts to start us off.

It was agreed that we shall meet on the first Thursday of every month in Sofi’s Bar on The Shore in Leith at 7pm (for 7.30 sharp start).

This month, we will be reading Stone Voices by Neil Ascherson, as chosen by Phil. Fopp Books and Records on Rose Street apparently has cheap copies. You can read a review from The Observer here.

Here is the line up for the next three months:

October - Stone Voices - Neil Ascherson (Phil)

November - Things Fall Apart (and any other Chinua Achebe novels/ short toires) - Chinua Achebe (Josiah)

December - Collection of Poetry - Linto Kwesi Johnson (Sophie)

Happy reading!
