I’m just back from viewing the winning entries to the World Press Photo Contest, currently on display at The Scottish Parliamnet. I’m sure other readers and contributers to The Manifesto blog would find it of interest too - a very eclectic mix of striking, provocative and sometimes beautiful portraits and photo-journalism chronicling the last twelve months of world events. There are a lot of photos on display so you might want to visit more than once. Entry is free and is on until 1st September.

This is a bit premature but worth putting in the diary to make sure you don’t miss it. It’s a documentary exploring how a number of American priests intentionally risked imprisonment while protesting the war in Vietnam. On in the Filmhouse - link here.
“A brilliant merger of political outrage and filmmaking.” (New York Times)
Followed by a discussion about the relationship between faith and activism. With Alastair McIntosh (author), Osama Saeed (Scottish Islmaic Foundation) and Tamsin Omond (PlaneStupid).

Professor James Cox will be giving his inaugural lecture as the Personal Chair of Religious Studies at the University of Edinburgh, entitled ‘Dressing up an African God in Christian Clothing’ at New College on the Mound, September 18th, 2pm. Could be of interest to anyone interested in how euro-centric interpretations of African beliefs and practices have persisted and developed. Email me if you want to know more…

The New Ten Commandments is a feature documentary marking the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights commissioned by the Scottish Documentary Institute. The film had its premier at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in June. The directors include Mark Cousins, Irvine Welsh and Tilda Swinton.
A friend of mine worked on the sound for the film and has given me a copy. Would anyone else in The Manifesto like to watch it together and discuss the human rights themes involved? Let me know by email and I’ll set something up.

We now have a date for the first book group meeting….. …dun dun da da….. Thursday 4th September. The venue is to be Sofi’s bar on The Shore in Leith 8-9pm. The number 22 bus from Princess Street takes you to the door, or email for directions.
At the first meeting, we will decide upon a list of books for the coming months. Everyone in the group will be invited to nominate a text or book - this could be a work of fiction, academic critique, play, or poems - on the very broad theme of alienation and injustice in line with the aims of The Manifesto. The idea is that we will each chair the meeting where our chosen book is discussed. We are also in discussions with local book shops about negotiating a discount on bulk-orders.
Initially, meetings will be fortnightly, with the option of moving to once a month if it becomes more realistic.
Please do spread the word about this as it would be great to have a wide range of voices represented. It’s an ideal time to get involved so even if you just want to listen in or join us for a coffee afterwards, you will be most welcome.

I am an artist presently working with a colleague to create a multi media exhibition Entiteled ‘Confinement’ for the Queens Hall Gallery in Hexham Northumberland. The installation aims to reflect on the space in which prisoners are confined whilst serving their sentences in the UK and Africa. This work has developed out of work we carried out in a decommissioned jail in Savannah Georgia in 2005.
As part of the work I want to list the dimensions of prison cells in different countries across the world, focusing on the cell sizes in this country & in Africa
So far I have found it difficult to track this information down & wondered if any member of Amnesty has or knows of any information regarding such information which I could use for this purpose?
