Book Group

We’re planning on starting a book group v soon - ideas for what to read most welcome!  Fiction or non-fiction, either is fine; let’s stay within the areas either of Scotland or Africa.  Check back for more details soon - leave suggestions in comments!

    My suggestions:
Neal Ascherson, Stone Voices: The Search For Scotland
Supposed to be ‘a richly textured and most unusual meditation on Scotland’, according to Andrew Marr…

    Sounds great Phil.

Something easy to get started might be good too. We had mentioned before Bill Duncan’s ‘Smiling School for Calvanists’. Certainly entertaining.
Or some poetry - ‘A Book of Lives’ by national poet Edwin Morgan draws together themes from a lifetime of work documenting regeneration in Scotland, discrimination, “love and sadness, energy and sheet delight”.

I’m really keen that this book group functions well from the outset. Some tentative suggestions of how to do this
    - whoever choses the book begins with a short introduction and motivation
    - have a rotating chair to keep discussion constructive and allow quieter members a voice
    - source library choice where possible
    - one member of the group each session donates their copy of the book/ text to The Manifesto library for all to use and borrow
